Snow conditions 28.4.2014
28.04.2014
Variable weather with local precipitation continues.
Freezing level is at around 2500 m above sea level. In the high mountains, 5 to about 10 cm of snow fell locally at the end of the week, which transformed quickly.
Significant snow cover extends on shady slopes to about 1600 m a.s.l., in gullies to about 1100 m. Above about 2000 m in the Julian Alps, snow depth is from about 350 cm to 450 cm, at 1500 m from 120 to about 200 cm.
Elsewhere, at 1500 m snow is mostly only on plateaus and in gullies.
The snowpack is mostly well transformed, with newer snow on the surface being less transformed.
Avalanche danger is mostly level 2.
The snowpack is generally stable, but due to relatively warm weather, a slab avalanche of wet snow can be triggered on steep, bare slopes. The possibility is lower in the high mountains.
Variable and quite cloudy weather will continue.
Freezing level will be at around 2500 m a.s.l. Occasional local showers and isolated thunderstorms will occur, more frequent in the afternoon. Snow conditions in the mountains will not change much, only in lower elevations will the snow melt.
The next snow report will be issued on Sunday, 4.5.2014 in the morning.
General avalanche danger is moderate, i.e. level 2 on the European 5-level scale.
