Snow conditions 28.4.2018

28.04.2018
General avalanche danger level - Saturday, 28. 4. 2018

Danger is level 2 on the European five-level scale - MODERATE.

Main problem: wet snow

Danger pattern: Spring situation

Risk assessment

Avalanche danger is LOW in the morning and partly in the forenoon, level 1, and from late forenoon to evening mainly MODERATE in the Julian Alps, level 2. The snowpack is mostly stable in the morning and partly in the forenoon, locally even refrozen, but softens during the day and becomes more unstable around midday. Steep slopes in the high mountains are especially dangerous. There you can trigger an avalanche of wet snow around midday and in the afternoon.

Snow conditions

The snowpack continues to melt; on Thursday and Friday, with a brief cooling, the snow refroze overnight. The snow is mostly well-settled and the top layer softened, depending also on current weather conditions. Overnight frost occurs mainly in frost hollows. Shady slopes are largely snow-free up to fairly high altitudes in many places.

Forecast weather development

Today it will be mostly clear. Freezing level is above the highest peaks. In the afternoon, a small shower is not excluded. Tomorrow there will be somewhat more cloudiness, and in the afternoon isolated short showers are possible. A light to moderate southwesterly wind will blow. On Monday morning it will be cloudy in the Julian Alps and western Karawanks, with local showers, possibly even a thunderstorm. In the afternoon, the clouds will break up, and another shower may form. Elsewhere it will be variably cloudy with local showers. There will not be much precipitation. Slightly cooler. On Tuesday partly clear with occasional increased cloudiness. On Wednesday mostly cloudy, with occasional precipitation likely.

Trend of snow conditions

The snowpack will melt and disappear. In the morning and partly in the forenoon, the snowpack will be mostly stable; around midday and in the afternoon it will become somewhat unstable in sunny weather. You may trigger some snow avalanche mainly in the high mountains of the Julian Alps on sufficiently steep slopes.
