Danger level 3 – considerable

Southern Julian Alps, Central Julian Alps, Eastern Julian Alps, Western Julian Alps, Kamnik Alps, Savinja Alps and Carinthia, Western Karawanks, Central Karawanks

New and wind-blown snow
On Wednesday night, precipitation appeared in the north. The snow line was initially at an altitude of around 1500 m and quickly dropped. Snowfall temporarily weakened on Thursday at noon. After the passage of a cold front, a strong northerly wind began to blow, transporting new snow and building new snow deposits on southern slopes. In total, 15-30 cm of new snow fell in the mountains.

The main dangers are new and wind-blown snow. The danger is increased especially in concave terrains and gullies, where the depth of new snow is greater due to snow deposits. On Saturday, it will be sunnier than in previous days and warmer. On sun-exposed slopes, the snow will wet during the day and freeze at night. Smaller wet snow avalanches are possible, mainly on very steep slopes or walls.

In addition to new snow, weak layers in the snowpack located deeper in the snowpack can pose local problems. There are more such weak layers on slopes above the forest. With a large load that exceeds the carrying capacity of these layers, a larger avalanche can also be triggered.

dp.4: cooling after warmth / warming after cold
15-30 cm of dry and loose snow fell in the mountains. During snowfall, a strong northerly wind blew, which in many places blew the snow down to the old base. During previous snowfall, graupel fell locally, which represents a potentially dangerous weak layer. Locally, graupel layers are 5-10 cm thick, possibly more.

In the old snowpack, snow layers are mostly well bonded together. Deep below the surface, several weak layers of facets and rounded grains appear, mainly on shady slopes.

Weather
Partly clear, more clouds in eastern mountain groups. Initially, a strengthened northerly wind will still blow, which will somewhat weaken during the day. Warmer. At midday, temperature at 1500 m around 0 °C, at 2500 m around -4 °C.

Outlook
In the coming days, more clouds, small showers possible at the beginning of next week. Avalanche danger will remain similar.

New and wind-blown snow
It snowed on Thursday and Friday, the snow line moved around 600 m altitude. 40-60 cm of new snow fell in the mountains. At the same time, a strong wind from northern and northeasterly directions blew, transporting new snow and building new snow deposits on southern slopes.

The main dangers are new and wind-blown snow. The danger is increased especially in concave terrains and gullies, where the depth of new snow is greater due to snow deposits. On sun-exposed slopes, the snow will wet during the day and freeze at night. During the day, some smaller wet snow avalanche is possible.
