Snow conditions 28. 4. 2025

28.04.2025
General avalanche danger level - Monday, 28. 4. 2025
The danger is level 2 on the European five-level scale - MODERATE.
Main problem: wet snow, gliding snow
Danger pattern: Spring situation

Risk assessment
Avalanche danger is MODERATE, level 2. Above 2000 m the danger will change during the day due to insolation, lower down the snow will be less stable all day. Small wet snow slab avalanches can release spontaneously or triggered by a skier.

Snow conditions
On Friday it snowed above 1800 m, above 2000 m up to 20 cm of snow fell in the Julian Alps, up to 30 cm in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. The new snow was soon moist after the end of precipitation but stable. With sunny weather on Sunday and today, Monday morning, the snow became more distinctly moist up to the highest summits, therefore on steep slopes wet non-cohesive snow slab avalanches released spontaneously. Snow is melting rapidly, snow line is rising.

Forecast weather development
From Monday to Friday the weather will be similar: sunny in the morning, around midday cumulus cloudiness will form covering the summits. Today, Monday afternoon, a shower may occur, but no precipitation in the following days. It will be warm, 0 °C isotherm near 3000 m. At 1500 m around 10 °C, at 2000 m around 7 °C. Little wind.

Tendency of snow conditions
The air will be fairly dry, so the snowpack surface will refreeze overnight above 2000 m. There the snow surface will change in characteristic daily spring cycles. Lower down the snow will probably remain soft, settling and melting. Above 2000 m the snowpack will become more stable each day, the probability of spontaneous release of wet snow slab avalanches will increase during the day due to solar radiation. Below 2000 m on very steep slopes a skier can trigger a surface slab avalanche of wet non-cohesive snow. In addition, there the threat of deep persistent wet snow slab avalanches that can release spontaneously regardless of time of day, aspect and additional stress.
