Snow conditions 29.12.2018
29.12.2018
The danger level is 1 on the European five-level scale - LOW.
Main problem:
Danger pattern: Cooling after warm weather / warming after frost
Risk assessment
Avalanche danger is LOW, 1st degree. The snowpack is stable. It is unlikely that any slab could release due to loading.
Snow conditions
Dry weather continues. Due to repeated thaws and coolings, the snow is stable, often also hard and icy. Mostly it is covered with crust, only in sheltered, northern slopes of the high mountains of the Julian Alps is it still soft in places.
Forecast weather development
Dry weather will not end yet. Today there is a pronounced temperature reversal, zero is at about 2100 m above sea level. During the day it will already cool somewhat. In the coming days it will be colder, zero will drop below 1300 m tomorrow, on Sunday to about 1000 m above sea level. Today and tomorrow a light to moderate northerly wind will blow in the high mountains, which will strengthen in the afternoon on Sunday and then also be quite strong on Monday. Especially on Sunday it will occasionally be mostly cloudy, some peaks may occasionally be in clouds.
Tendency of snow conditions
The state of the snowpack will not change much, even the strong northerly wind will not have much influence. The snowpack will remain stable, frozen and often hard and icy, hence the risk of slips. Avalanche danger will be LOW, 1st degree.
