Snow conditions 29.3.2019
29.03.2019
Danger is level 2 on the European five-level scale - MODERATE.
Main problem: weak layers, wind slab
Danger pattern: Spring situation
Risk assessment
Avalanche danger above sea level around 1800 m is MODERATE, level 2, lower down LOW, level 1. Steep slopes in the high mountains are particularly dangerous, especially at locations with wind slab, where with greater load on the snow cover you can trigger a small avalanche.
Snow conditions
The snowpack is mostly soft in the high mountains, lower down above around 1500 m mostly crusted, except in some shady locations in the high mountains where the top layer of snow that fell on Monday may still be soft. Especially on the south and west sides of ridges and passes there is quite a bit of slush, wind-exposed locations are scoured to the old, hard and partly icy base in places.
Forecast weather development
Today sunny weather. Weak northeast wind blowing. Tomorrow sunny with considerable high cloudiness. Weak local wind blowing, in the high mountains weak northeast wind. Freezing level will rise above 2500 m above sea level. Sunday clear, Monday some cloudiness again.
Trend in snow conditions
In the coming days due to sunny and warmer weather the snowpack will especially on sun-exposed locations melt during the day and refreeze at night during sunny and warmer weather, the crust will strengthen. In shady locations in the high mountains the snow will remain mostly soft and poorly transformed. The snowpack will gradually stabilize, only on sunny locations it will become somewhat more unstable during the day and especially there on steep slopes mainly at locations with wind slab you can trigger a small avalanche.
