Danger level 3 – considerable

Southern Julian Alps, Central Julian Alps, Eastern Julian Alps, Western Julian Alps, Kamnik Alps, Savinja Alps and Carinthia, Western Karawanks, Central Karawanks

New and wind-blown snow
On Wednesday night, precipitation appeared in the north. The snow line was initially at around 1500 m and quickly lowered. Snowfall temporarily weakened on Thursday noon. After the passage of a cold front, a strong north wind began to blow, transporting new snow and building new snow deposits on southern slopes. In total, 15-30 cm of new snow fell in the mountains.

The main dangers are new and wind-blown snow. The danger is increased especially in concave locations and gullies, where the height of new snow is greater due to snow deposits.

In addition to new snow, weak layers in the snow cover located deeper in the snow cover can locally pose a problem. There are more such weak layers on slopes above the forest. Under high load that exceeds the carrying capacity of these layers, a larger avalanche can also be triggered.

dp.4: cooling after heat / warming after cold
15-30 cm of dry and loose snow fell in the mountains. During snowfall, a strong north wind was blowing, which blew snow to the old base in many places. New snow bonds only slowly with the old base. Ridges and summits are blown to the old base, sometimes there is little old base. During previous snowfall, graupel fell locally, which represents a potentially dangerous weak layer. Locally, graupel layers are 5-10 cm thick, possibly more.

In the old snow cover, snow layers are mostly well connected to each other. Deep below the surface, several weak layers of facets and rounded grains appear, mainly on shaded slopes.

Weather
Partly clear with moderate cloudiness, cloud bases will mostly be above summits. Moderate to strong north wind will continue to blow. At midday, temperature at 1500 m around 2, at 2500 m around -6 °C.

Outlook
In the coming days, more cloudiness, small showers possible at the beginning of next week. Avalanche danger will remain similar.
