Snow conditions 3.12.2018
3.12.2018
Danger is level 1 on the European five-level scale - LOW.
Main problem:
Danger pattern: Cooling after warm weather / warming after cold
Risk assessment
Avalanche danger is LOW, level 1. The snowpack is stable.
Snow conditions
There is little snow in the mountains, slightly more only in the high mountains of the Julian Alps. The snow is heavily wind-packed. The snow cover is still mostly soft in gullies and sheltered areas, elsewhere crusty. The crust formed due to daily melting and nightly freezing as well as wind. The crust mostly does not hold human weight. Due to increased moisture and warming (zero isotherm today at around 2500 m above sea level), the snow has also settled and wettened somewhat more in the high mountains.
Forecast weather development
There were transient minor precipitations last night, which did not affect the snowpack condition. It will be dry during the day and tomorrow as well as on Wednesday. On Tuesday, the zero isotherm will slowly descend to around 2000 m above sea level, on Wednesday it will cool more markedly.
Trend in snow conditions
The snowpack will continue to slowly transform and settle, melting lower down. The surface crust will strengthen. Avalanche danger will remain at level 1.
