Snow conditions 31.5.2019
31.05.2019
Danger is 3rd degree on the European five-point scale - CONSIDERABLE.
Main problem: wind slab, wet snow, new snow
Danger pattern: Spring situation
Risk assessment
Avalanche danger in the high mountains above about 2200 m elevation is CONSIDERABLE, 3rd degree, lower down mostly LOW, 1st degree. Steep slopes are particularly dangerous, where wet snow avalanches can be triggered especially during the day due to warming. Areas with wind-packed snow are also dangerous, where slab avalanches can be triggered mainly by a minor load on the snowpack.
Snow conditions
In recent days, considerable snow has fallen in the high mountains, especially above about 2200 m elevation. Wind has formed drifts on western and southern sides of ridges and saddles. New snow is settling quickly, but daily warming and sun cause the snowpack on the highest peaks to be unstable, soft and loose.
Forecast weather development
In the next few days it will warm up, freezing level above the highest peaks. No significant precipitation that would increase the amount of new snow, rain may locally only wet the snowpack.
Trend of snow conditions
On the highest peaks the snowpack will initially remain relatively unstable. Wet snow avalanches may release spontaneously from steep slopes, also individual slabs especially on sun-exposed slopes. Snow will settle quickly, lower down also melt.
