Danger level 3 – considerable

Southern Julian Alps, Central Julian Alps, Eastern Julian Alps, Western Julian Alps, Kamnik Alps, Savinja Alps and Koroška, Western Karawanks, Central Karawanks

New and wind-blown snow
The main danger is posed by new and wind-blown snow. The stability of the snowpack is lower mainly in concave terrain and gullies, where the depth of fresh snow is greater due to wind deposits.

In addition to new snow, weak layers in the snowpack located deeper down may pose a local problem. There are more such weak layers on shady slopes above the treeline. Under heavy load exceeding the strength of these layers, larger avalanches may be triggered.

Snowpack
Danger patterns
dp.4: cooling after warmth / warming after cold
15-30 cm of dry and light snow fell in the mountains. During snowfall, a strong northerly wind blew, scouring snow to the old surface in many places. New snow is only slowly bonding to the old surface. Ridges and summits are scoured to the old surface, sometimes with little old snow. During precipitation more than a week ago, graupel fell locally, representing a potentially dangerous weak layer. Locally, graupel layers are 5-10 cm thick, sometimes more.

In the old snowpack, snow layers are mostly well bonded. Deeper below the surface, there are several weak layers of faceted and rounded grains, more frequent on shady slopes.

Weather
Then variable cloudiness, more sun in the west. Moderate northerly winds will blow, strengthening during the day. At midday, temperature around 0 °C at 1500 m, around -8 °C at 2500 m.

Outlook
Avalanche danger will remain similar.
In the coming days, variable weather with cloudy and partly clear periods, possible showers. More sun in the west. Relatively cold for this time of year, moderate northerly winds, strong on Tuesday and Wednesday.
