Snow conditions 3.5.2018

3.05.2018
General danger level - Thursday, 3 May 2018

The danger is level 2 on the European five-level scale - MODERATE.

Main problem: wet snow

Danger pattern: Spring situation

Risk assessment

The avalanche danger is LOW in the morning and partly in the forenoon, level 1, from late forenoon to evening above about 1800 m altitude MODERATE, level 2. The snowpack is mostly stable in the morning and partly in the forenoon, in places in the high mountains even refrozen, during the day it softens and becomes more labile at midday. Steep slopes in the high mountains are especially dangerous. There you can trigger a slab avalanche of soaked snow at midday and in the afternoon. South-facing slopes are more dangerous.

Snow conditions

The snowpack is melting, consolidated snowpack is mostly still on plateaus and partly in shady locations of the mid-mountains and in the high mountains above about 1800 m a.s.l. Snow is refrozen in the morning after clear nights especially in the high mountains and in frost hollows, during the day it is softened.

Forecast weather development

Today partly clear at first, in the afternoon and evening variable cloudy with local showers and thunderstorms. Weak to moderate winds from easterly directions will blow. Tomorrow variable to mostly cloudy and occasionally foggy. Occasional local precipitation, partly thunderstorms, more frequent in the afternoon. Similar weather also on Saturday. On Sunday and Monday mostly sunny, on Sunday still possible some shower.

Tendency of snow conditions

The snowpack will melt and disappear. In the morning and partly in the forenoon the snowpack will be mostly stable, at midday and in the afternoon it will become somewhat labile in sunny weather. You can trigger some snow avalanche especially in the high mountains of the Julian Alps on sufficiently steep slopes. Somewhat more likely to trigger a snow avalanche also after days with somewhat more intense precipitation. Otherwise the snowpack will be mostly stable.
