Snow conditions 4.2.2022

4.02.2022
General danger level - Friday, 4.2.2022
The danger is level 1 on the European 5-level scale - LOW.
Main problem: wind slab
Danger pattern: Cooling after warm weather / warming after cold

Risk assessment
The avalanche danger is mostly LOW, level 1. Especially in wind-packed and icy areas, there is a HIGH GLIDING RISK. The snowpack is mostly stable. Only on steep, shady high-altitude slopes are there rare spots with individual old slabs that can release under high load.

Snow conditions
In the mountains, snow conditions are hardly changing. Hard, crusted or heavily wind-transformed snowpack prevails in the mountains. Wind-exposed areas are heavily scoured, even down to bare ground. Only in sheltered, shady spots is there some wind-blown snow from the recent light snowfall. On sun-exposed slopes, there are many bare patches due to melting. In sunny weather, snow on sun-exposed slopes softens slightly during the day and refreezes at night. The snow depth is modest for this time of year.

Forecast weather development
Today it will be partly clear, from midday and in the afternoon it will gradually cloud over from the southwest, first in the western and southern Julian Alps. Cloudy and foggy in the hills of northern Primorska and Notranjska, where it may drizzle lightly in the afternoon and evening, snow line around 1300 m above sea level. Weak to moderate westerly winds will blow. Zero isotherm at about 2400 m above sea level. Tomorrow partly clear with occasional increased cloudiness, only in Notranjska and northern Primorska it will be cloudy and partly foggy in the morning and forenoon with possible occasional dew. It will clear up during the day. Mostly weak northeasterly winds will blow. In the high mountains it will be slightly colder than today. On Sunday it will be mostly clear at first, only in the western Julian Alps and western Karawanks it may be more cloudy and foggy in the morning and forenoon. It will gradually cloud over during the day. Southwesterly winds will strengthen. On Sunday night into Monday, minor precipitation will start, snow line at about 900 m above sea level. On Monday morning it will ease, partly clearing. Strong northerly winds will blow. It will cool slightly.

Trend in snow conditions
Snow conditions will not change significantly in the coming days either. There will be little new snow on Sunday night into Monday, and at the same time the strong northerly wind will quickly scour it. Small slabs will form in lee areas, but they will not significantly affect avalanche danger. The snowpack will remain mostly stable. Gliding risk will remain HIGH. The next avalanche bulletin will be published on Monday, 7.2.2022.

Next issue: Monday, 7.2.2022
