Snow conditions 4.3.2022

4.03.2022
General avalanche danger level - Friday, 4. 3. 2022
The danger is level 1 on the European five-level scale - LOW.
Main problem: weak layers, wind slab
Danger pattern: Cooling after warm weather / thawing after frost

Risk assessment
Avalanche danger is mostly LOW, level 1. More dangerous are places with wind slab, mainly on southern and western slopes. Be particularly careful in gullies, where there can be larger amounts of wind-blown snow, and at transitions from thicker to thinner snow cover. A smaller avalanche can be triggered on rare spots already under minor loading, but mostly a large load is required. Wind-exposed locations are heavily scoured. The snowpack is icy in places, so there is a risk of slipping there.

Snow conditions
In slightly warmer weather, snow on sun-exposed aspects has settled somewhat during the day, especially in the mid-mountains, over the last two days and refrozen at night. With today's cooling, this process will end. Snow is mostly hard and crusted, but in shaded aspects in sheltered spots there is still up to about 20 cm of soft wind-blown snow in places. There is not much snow in the mountains, snowpack depth is very uneven. Wind-exposed locations are heavily scoured, even to bare ground.

Forecast weather development
Today it will be mostly clear at first, then variably cloudy during the day, with some snow showers forming. Weak to moderate north to northeast wind will blow. Temperatures below freezing. Tomorrow moderately to mostly cloudy, some summits in clouds. Less cloudiness in the western Julian Alps. Moderate east to northeast wind will blow. Cold. Sunday and Monday will also be quite cloudy and locally foggy, windy and cold in the mountains.

Trend in snow conditions
In cold and windy weather, avalanche and snow conditions will not change much. Snow will remain frozen and hard, so the wind will not create any new significant accumulations. The snowpack will be stable, but in sheltered shady aspects where there may still be softer wind-blown snow, a smaller avalanche could be triggered under load. The next avalanche bulletin will be published on Monday, 7.3.2022.
