Snow conditions 4.5.2012

4.05.2012
In fairly warm and sunny weather, the snow in the mountains has been melting, while higher up it has been settling and transforming. It hasn't frozen even at night anymore. During local showers and thunderstorms, it has rained even on the highest peaks. The snow cover has mostly stabilized, and only in some high-mountain gullies is it currently still poorly transformed.

The consolidated snow cover is mostly only still present in gullies and on plateaus, and on sun-facing slopes in the high mountains above about 2000 m. Mostly, the snow is wet and soft. At 1500 m, there is often no consolidated snow cover even on plateaus, while at 2500 m there is still about 170 cm of snow in the Julian Alps. The avalanche danger is level 1. During the day, the snow cover softens further on sun-exposed locations and becomes somewhat labile, and only there can we still trigger a wet snow avalanche.

In the coming days, there will be more cloud cover, so the sun's influence during the day will be less. The snow line will be at an elevation of around 2600 m. On Saturday and Sunday, local precipitation will mainly occur in the hills of western Slovenia. The snow level will be between 1900 and 2200 m. Therefore, by Monday morning, some new snow will have fallen again in the high mountains of the Julian Alps, elsewhere mostly none or the amount will be very small.

The new report will be issued on Monday, 7.5.2012.

The general avalanche danger is level 1 on the European five-level scale.
