Snow conditions 4.5.2022

4.05.2022
General danger level - Wednesday, 4. 5. 2022
Danger is level 2 on the European five-level scale - MODERATE.
Main problem: wet snow, new snow
Danger pattern: Spring situation

Risk assessment
Avalanche danger is LOW everywhere, level 1, and increases during the day due to daytime warming. The snowpack is mostly well bonded and stable. More caution is needed in the high mountains, where the snowpack from the last snowfall has not yet fully transformed. Under heavy load you may trigger a small slab avalanche. On steep sun-exposed slopes small wet snow avalanches are possible. Higher areas still have winter conditions, wind-exposed and shady locations are especially in the morning and partly forenoon dangerous for slipping.

Snow conditions
Snow that fell in the high mountains in the past days has quickly settled and melted. Lower down there is mainly old and transformed snowpack in shady locations, above around 2000 m there is some newer snow on that base. During the day snow softens, at night it refreezes and is therefore hard and icy in the morning, newer crusty. In the mid-mountains snowpack lies only in shady locations.

Forecast weather development
Today initially mostly clear. During the day cumulus cloudiness will form, in the afternoon local showers, possibly a thunderstorm. Weak southwesterly wind will blow. Tomorrow weather similar, only afternoon showers slightly less likely. Zero isotherm at sea level around 2500 m. On Friday cloudy and foggy with occasional precipitation starting around mid-morning. Snowfall limit at sea level around 2000 m. Easterly wind will blow.

Trend of snow conditions
Snow conditions will remain similar today and tomorrow, only snow will soften a bit more due to higher temperatures, newer will melt faster. Small avalanches or sloughs of southern snow possible. In the morning slip hazard in high mountains. Next avalanche bulletin we will publish on Friday, 6.5.2022.
