Snow conditions
It snowed in the mountains on Thursday up to about 1500 m above sea level. The most snow fell in the high mountains of the Julian Alps, up to about 40 cm, in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps and eastern Karawanks up to about 20 cm. Significant snow cover starts at about 1900 m above sea level, sometimes a little lower. During snowfall, a strong southwesterly wind blew, which blew away much of the new snow, wind-exposed locations are also almost completely snow-free, in lee areas there are drifts. The snow is dry and soft, somewhat compacted by wind in places.
Forecast weather development
Today it will be cloudy in the mountains, summits will be in clouds. Freezing level is at about 1800 m above sea level, it will drop a bit more by tomorrow. Tomorrow it will be partly clear at first, in the afternoon somewhat cloudier and some summits may be in clouds. Mostly light wind from eastern and southern directions will blow. On Sunday it will be cloudy and foggy and mostly dry. There will be temporary slight warming. Moderate southwesterly wind will blow. On Monday there will be occasional light precipitation. The snow line will drop quickly and will be at about 1000 m above sea level by midday. Wind from northern directions will start blowing.
Trend of snow conditions
Due to relatively low temperature, the snow will transform only slowly in the coming days. The sun is already weak, so its influence on the snowpack will really be small. On sun-facing slopes, a thin crust may form on Saturday due to daytime melting and nighttime freezing. With temporary warming on Sunday, the snowpack lower down will become somewhat wet. On Monday we expect from 5 to at most 10 cm of new snow. Conditions in the high mountains are wintery. Caution is needed primarily due to drifts, over time the snow may become icy in places.
