Snow conditions 5.2.2020

5.02.2020
Danger level is 2 on the European five-level scale - MODERATE.

Main problem: wind slab

Danger pattern: cooling after warm weather / warming after frost

Danger pattern: cold weather, poorly bonded fresh snow with wind

Risk assessment

Avalanche danger above about 1800 m elevation is MODERATE, level 2, lower down mostly LOW, level 1. Especially dangerous are south-facing slopes, where on wind slabs you can trigger mainly small slab avalanches already under minor loading. At places where new snow is drifted, there is high DANGER OF SLIDES on icy base.

Snow conditions

Yesterday in the mountains with reinforced north wind up to about 10 cm of snow fell, mostly on a hard base. With noticeable cooling, previously wet snow froze, so it is mostly hard. On this base there is new soft snow, which is fully drifted into wind deposits on south sides of ridges and saddles.

Forecast weather development

Today variably cloudy, summits occasionally in clouds. Snow showers will occur. Strong north wind will blow. Cold. Tomorrow and Friday sunny, weak to moderate north wind blowing. Temperature in high mountains below zero, freezing level at elevation between 1200 and 1600 m above sea level.

Tendency of snow conditions

The snowpack will remain frozen and hard due to low temperatures, only new snow will remain soft in sheltered spots. On Thursday and Friday on sun-exposed mid-mountain slopes snow will become wet during the day and freeze at night. Due to the weak layer between the old snowpack and snow that fell on Tuesday, slabs may still release under loading, especially on south sides of ridges and saddles.

Next bulletin: Saturday, 8. 2. 2020
