Danger is level 1 on the European five-level scale - LOW.
Main problem: favourable conditions, wet snow
Danger pattern: Cooling after warm weather / warming after frost
Risk assessment
Avalanche danger is mostly LOW, level 1, due to cooling and cloudier weather. The snowpack is icy in places, similarly on ridges, so risk of slipping.
Snow conditions
The snowpack is mostly stable and hard or crusted. Especially on sun-exposed slopes it is also icy, ridges are icy too. Only today in the mid-mountains, especially in the western part of our mountains, the snow might soften a bit during the day, as there will be some sunshine in the morning there. The chance of triggering an avalanche is low, but the risk of slipping is high.
Forecast weather development
Today variable cloudiness. Mostly dry in the morning, local precipitation will start appearing in the afternoon, more frequent from mid-afternoon onwards. More of them in the western half of Slovenia and in the south of the country. The snow line will lower and in the evening and the first part of the night it may snow to lowlands in places in central, southern and northwestern Slovenia. In the mountains it will cool significantly by evening, a strong wind from north to northeast direction will blow. Tomorrow mostly clear, moderate northeast wind blowing, which will gradually weaken during the day. Cold. On Sunday mostly clear, weak northwest wind blowing. It will warm up a bit, in the afternoon in the mid-mountains it may warm up a little above zero. On Monday sunny and a bit warmer, freezing level at about 1600 m above sea level.
Trend of snow conditions
Today the snowpack in south-facing mid-mountains, especially in the western part of our mountains, may soften a bit in the morning, but in the high mountains it will remain hard and frozen. Tomorrow and on Sunday the snow will be hard and frozen, only in the mid-mountains on Sunday afternoon on south-facing slopes it may soften a bit, but there it is mostly already bare or there is very little snow. Similar on Monday. Avalanche danger will remain LOW, but high risk of slipping.
