Snow conditions 6.4.2018

7.04.2018
General avalanche danger level - Friday, 6. 4. 2018

Danger is 3rd degree on the European five-level scale - CONSIDERABLE.

Main problem: wet snow

Danger pattern: Spring situation

Risk assessment

Avalanche danger is mostly MODERATE, 2nd degree, during the day it increases due to the influence of the sun on sun-facing slopes to CONSIDERABLE, 3rd degree. At night snow freezes and is more stable, during the day it softens on sunny aspects and consequently destabilizes. Avalanches can release on weak layers or on the surface of the old snowpack. Steep slopes and windslab are particularly dangerous. Lower down, slab avalanches are also expected.

Snow conditions

The condition of the snowpack varies considerably. It depends on aspect, elevation and also on the amount of cloud cover or sun. The snowpack is frozen in the morning and hard at higher elevations. During the day it softens, only in shade it remains mostly hard, in the high mountains it can be softer in shady hollows, and there is still some windblown soft snow in places.

Forecast weather development

Today mostly clear, during the day some shallow cumulus clouds will form. Weak to moderate northerly winds will blow. Tomorrow also mostly clear, during the day cloudiness will increase in the eastern Karavanke and Pohorje, in the afternoon also in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. Elsewhere during the day some shallow cumulus clouds will form. Weak to moderate southeasterly wind will blow. On Sunday mostly clear, during the day low stratus clouds will arrive. A southwesterly will start blowing. On Monday it will cloud over from the west. Around noon precipitation will start in the west, spreading in the afternoon over central Slovenia. A strengthened southwesterly will blow.

Tendency of snow conditions

The snowpack will settle and transform, at lower elevations snow will diminish. In the longer term it will gradually stabilize, so avalanche danger will slowly decrease. Especially late morning and afternoon, individual wet snow avalanches may still release on sufficiently steep sun-facing slopes, including slab avalanches. In the morning and early forenoon, there will be a risk of slips due to the frozen and partly icy and hard snowpack.
