Snow conditions 6.4.2020

6.04.2020
The danger is level 2 on the European five-level scale - MODERATE.

Main problem: wind slab, wet snow

Danger pattern: cooling after warm weather / warming after cold

Danger pattern: spring situation

Risk assessment

Avalanche danger is above sea level around 1700 m MODERATE, level 2, lower down LOW, level 1. With warming, during the day on sun-exposed slopes the danger of wet snow avalanches increases. You can trigger a snow avalanche with greater loading of the snow cover on steeper slopes with wind slabs still present in the high mountains. Especially in the morning and part of the forenoon there is danger of slips on frozen and icy snow cover. Lower down, due to the small amount of snow, the danger is low.

Snow conditions

With mostly sunny weather and due to the increasingly warm air mass, the snow cover is transforming faster especially on sun-exposed slopes. Snow softens during the day and freezes at night. Ripening process prevails. In the mid-mountains the snow cover is melting faster. In the high mountains there are still places with wind slab, and there too on sunnier slopes a crust has formed. Slopes exposed to wind and sun are at least hard and partly icy in the morning and part of the forenoon.

Forecast weather development

From today until including Thursday it will be mostly clear. Each day it will be one degree warmer, more pronounced warming expected on Thursday. Today at 1500 m around 4, at 2500 m around 0 °C, on Thursday at 1500 m around 10, at 2500 m around 4 °C. Weak to moderate wind from easterly directions will blow.

Trend of snow conditions

In the spring situation, in the morning and part of the forenoon avalanche danger will be low, later it will increase especially on sun-exposed slopes. In the morning and early forenoon there will be slip danger. Even faster transformation of the snow cover is expected in the second half of the week when it warms up. Differences between sun-exposed and shaded slopes will increase.
