General danger level - Wednesday, 6. 4. 2022
The danger is level 3 on the European five-level scale - CONSIDERABLE.
Main problem: wind slab, wet snow
Danger pattern: Spring situation
Risk assessment
Avalanche danger is mostly MODERATE, level 2, during the day above around 1800 m, where there is more snow, due to daily warming and sun exposure it increases to CONSIDERABLE, level 3. Especially steeper slopes with a thick layer of recent snow on firm snowpack are dangerous. Especially during daytime smaller and medium-sized wet snow avalanches can release spontaneously, more likely on sun-exposed slopes. Lower down on grassy and sufficiently steep slopes individual full-depth avalanches are possible. Especially on southern slopes around ridges and saddles there are wind slabs. There with minor loading especially from mid-morning onwards wind slab avalanches can be triggered.
Snow conditions
Snow that fell at the weekend end has settled somewhat and consolidated. Especially from steeper slopes quite a few new snow avalanches, both small and medium-sized, have released. Snow is wet, soft and heavy during the day, softens somewhat also in shaded spots, overnight crust forms. Ridges are scoured, in the morning especially there icy conditions possible.
Forecast weather evolution
Today mostly clear, slopes of western and southern Julian Alps may be cloud-covered up to around 1400 m a.s.l. Mostly light westerly winds. Zero isotherm around 2500 m a.s.l. Tomorrow initially mostly cloudy, clouds above peaks. During day clearing, only on slopes of western and southern Julian Alps and hills of northern Primorska and Notranjska clouds gathering. Morning and partly forenoon light northerly wind, then strengthening southwesterly. Temperatures similar to today. Friday mostly cloudy and partly foggy, only eastern Karawanks and Pohorje less cloudy. Westwards occasional minor precipitation, snow limit 1800-2200 m a.s.l. Strengthened southwesterly wind. Saturday precipitation covering all Slovenia daytime, cooling.
Snow conditions trend
High mountains spring snow and weather situation. Snow rapidly softens daytime especially sun-exposed slopes becoming unstable. From sufficiently steep slopes wet snow avalanches expected. Exception shadier high mountain locations, avalanches less common. Conditions demanding especially daytime avalanche prone. Avalanche danger morning and early forenoon MODERATE level 2, midday and afternoon above around 1800 m CONSIDERABLE level 3. Friday much less sun, sloughing less likely. Snow not freezing yet except highest summits, soft and wet. Saturday new snowfall and transient cooling expected. Next avalanche bulletin Friday 8.4.2022.
