Snow conditions 6. 10. 2025

6.10.2025
General avalanche danger level - Monday, 6. 10. 2025
Danger is level 2 on the European five-level scale - MODERATE.
Main problem: new snow, wind slab
Danger pattern: Early winter, surface hoar

Risk assessment
Avalanche danger is MODERATE, level 2, above about 1500 m a.s.l., LOW, level 1, lower down. On steep slopes, you can trigger a wind slab avalanche especially where there is wind slab upon loading the snowpack; where the base is grassy, a small dry loose snow avalanche may also release. Steep gullies where wind has drifted snow are also dangerous.

Snow conditions
On Sunday, the snow line during precipitation dropped a little below 1000 m a.s.l. 5 to almost 50 cm of snow fell, depending on altitude. There is less snow in the eastern part of our mountains. The north and northeast wind transported the new snow into drifts. The snowpack is soft, below around 2000 m it has already settled somewhat and faceted, higher up the snow is dry and light.

Forecast weather development
Dry weather will prevail in the coming days. It will gradually warm up. The 0°C isotherm is today at about 2000 m a.s.l., tomorrow 100 m higher, on Wednesday it will rise above the highest peaks. Today and tomorrow a strong north wind will blow, which will especially in the high mountains still transport snow, then it will weaken. Snow will settle and melt in the mid-mountains, especially on sun-exposed slopes. In the high mountains, it will remain longer in shady locations, there it will facet during daytime warming and freeze at night. Therefore, conditions in shady high mountain locations will be demanding until the end of the week, especially in the morning with local slip hazard.

Trend in snow conditions
This is an extraordinary report on the state of the snowpack in the mountains. We will issue it again upon possibly heavier snowfall.
