Snow conditions 7.5.2015

ASSESSMENT OF RISK

Avalanche danger is level 1.

The snowpack is mostly stable. It freezes at night only in the high mountains, during the day it softens slightly on the surface.

The risk is low. No spontaneous avalanching is expected. An avalanche can exceptionally be triggered only on rare steep slopes in the high mountains and with greater additional load.

SNOW CONDITIONS

Snow is melting slowly. Temperatures have been high in recent days, so snow has mostly not frozen even in the high mountains at night. Consolidated snowpack exists only in gullies and on plateaus of the high mountains. It cooled slightly at night with the passage of a cold front, but the snowline will mostly be at the level of the highest peaks during the day.

In the Julian Alps at 2500 m above sea level there is up to about 130 cm of snow, elsewhere in our mountains only smaller amounts in gullies and ravines.

CURRENT STATE OF THE SNOWPACK

The snowpack is well transformed. Due to the warm air mass, the snow on the surface is softened, at night it can freeze only in the high mountains.

FORECAST WEATHER DEVELOPMENT

Today and tomorrow mostly sunny and dry. The snowline will mostly be above the highest peaks. On Saturday mostly cloudy, with occasional small local precipitation. On Sunday morning fairly sunny, in the afternoon variable cloudiness with local showers, possibly some thunderstorms.

TREND OF SNOW CONDITIONS

Snow will continue to melt. At night it will freeze in the high mountains if nights are sufficiently clear, so in the morning the snow may be hard and icy.

As of today, we have stopped the regular publication of snow conditions in the mountains. We will resume issuing reports after November 15 or with the first significant snowfall.
