Snow conditions 7.5.2021

7.05.2021
The danger is level 2 on the European five-level scale - MODERATE.
Main problem: wind-packed snow, wet snow, new snow
Danger pattern: Cooling after warm weather / warming after cold

Risk assessment
Avalanche danger is currently above sea level around 1600 m MODERATE, level 2, lower down LOW, level 1. Steeper slopes are especially dangerous, where there is a greater amount of new and wet snow on old and firmer snow base, individual wet snow avalanches will still occur there. Small snow avalanches are also possible on steep grassy slopes without old snow cover. In higher parts of the high mountains, conditions are fully wintery, there is also a larger amount of untransformed and wind-packed snow. Main danger above sea level around 2300 m are small slab avalanches that can be triggered under minor load. Wind-exposed locations in the high mountains are icy in places and dangerous for slipping.

Snow conditions
After Thursday's cooling with snowfall down to some valleys, the air in the heights warmed considerably already on Thursday during the day. The snow line has risen slightly today and is currently around 2300 m. Above this height snow is drier and also poorly transformed, lower down new snow is increasingly wet. At 1500 m 5 to 20 cm new snow, at 2500 m amount of new snow 20 to 40 cm. In high mountains there are many slabs, ridges are hard and icy in places.

Forecast weather development
Today cloudy and foggy with precipitation, which will strengthen midday and afternoon. Snow line, currently around 2300 m, will drop to sea level around 1400 m. Morning moderate southwesterly wind, afternoon northerly winds. Morning at 1500 m around 6, at 2500 m around 0 °C. Afternoon cooling. Saturday partly clear with variable cirrus cloudiness, south slopes may be occasionally foggy. In high mountains northwesterly, in mid-mountains weak southeasterly wind. Midday at 1500 m around 2, at 2500 m around -3 °C. Sunday and Monday mostly clear. Southwesterly gradually strengthening. Noticeable warming. Midday at 1500 m around 12, at 2500 m around 6 °C.

Trend in snow conditions
Today expect in high mountains 10 to 30 cm southern snow, in mid-mountains mostly up to 10 cm new snow. New snow will bond relatively well with the base. Only exceptionally small dry snow avalanches possible in higher parts of high mountains. Southwesterly will build cornices and slabs. Overnight clearing and cooling, wetter snow will freeze quickly, crust will form. Saturday daytime expect spring situation, due to sun and daytime warming especially on sunny aspects new snow will become unstable, wet snow avalanches will release spontaneously. Avalanche danger will INCREASE and above sea level around 1700 m CONSIDERABLE, level 3. Similar conditions also Sunday, when daytime warming even more pronounced. Possible also some old snow avalanche and cornice collapse. Especially in morning and forenoon time slipping hazard due to icy snow base.

Next bulletin: Monday, 10. 5. 2021
