Snow conditions 7. 4. 2025

7.04.2025
General danger level - Monday, 7. 4. 2025
Danger is level 1 on the European 5-level scale - LOW.
Main problem: wind slab
Danger pattern: Cooling after warm weather / warming after frost
Danger pattern: Spring situation

Risk assessment
The danger of avalanche release is generally LOW, level 1. After cooling, the snow has frozen and mostly stabilised. Only in shady areas might you encounter a wind slab that could release under heavy load on sufficiently steep slopes. There is a risk of gliding falls in places, especially on sun-exposed and wind-exposed aspects.

Snow conditions
The snowpack is mostly hard or crusted, even in shady areas. There are no new wind slabs, and there has been too little precipitation to affect snow and avalanche conditions. Before the cooling, wet snow avalanches released from steeper south-facing slopes, the avalanche debris is now frozen.

Forecast weather development
Today, Monday afternoon, it will be sunny and cold. A weak north to north-east wind will blow. Tomorrow will be partly clear with occasional moderate cloudiness, clouds will occasionally form over some peaks. A weak wind from northerly directions will blow. In the afternoon, the zero isotherm will rise to about 1600 m above sea level. On Wednesday it will be slightly warmer, the zero isotherm will be around 1900 m above sea level. Moderately to mostly cloudy, peaks will occasionally be in clouds. A weak wind from westerly directions will blow. On Thursday and Friday it will be somewhat sunnier and gradually warmer.

Tendency of snow conditions
On Tuesday avalanche conditions will not change. Due to the low temperature, the snowpack will remain mostly stable. From Wednesday onwards, however, there will be an increasing influence of the sun and rising temperatures. During the day, snow on sun-exposed aspects will become moist and freeze at night. Therefore, from late morning to evening, the snowpack on south-facing slopes will be less stable, a slab may also release. There will be no major changes in the shade. In the second half of the week, spring conditions will again prevail in the mountains.
