Snow conditions 8.11.2019
8.11.2019
Danger is level 1 on the European five-level scale - LOW.
Main problem: new snow
Danger pattern: Early winter, ground snow
Risk assessment
Avalanche danger is low due to the small total amount of snow and the lack of a base layer, level 1.
Snow conditions
In the high mountains, 10 to more than 50 cm of snow fell in the past days, the most in the Julian Alps. It snowed on mostly bare ground. Southwest and south winds transported snow into wind slabs on exposed locations. The snow is soft and quite wind-drifted.
Expected weather development
This evening and overnight, there will be precipitation with snow line mostly between 1200 and 1500 m, occasionally somewhat lower in places. A strengthened south wind will blow, weakening tomorrow and turning more southwest and west. By tomorrow morning, above around 1500 m up to 10 to about 30 cm of snow may fall, the most in the Julian Alps, on the east even less than 10 cm.
Trend of snow conditions
Avalanche conditions will slightly deteriorate in the high mountains by tomorrow morning. Tomorrow, new snow may shed and avalanche from steep slopes; these will be small loose snow avalanches. Above 2000 m, wind slabs will also form. Danger will temporarily increase there to level 2. On Sunday and Monday, new snow will consolidate somewhat and avalanche danger will gradually decrease. Renewed precipitation is expected on Tuesday, with snow line also above around 1500 m.
