Snow conditions 8.12.2014
8.12.2014
At the end of the week it was cloudy and mostly foggy weather in the mountains. There were occasional light precipitation. The snow line gradually lowered, on Sunday it was at sea level up to around 800 m. In the mountains a total of 5 to 10 cm of snow fell. The snow was slowly transforming.
At 2500 m above sea level there is snow in the Julian Alps up to around 130 cm, at 1500 m around 30 cm. Snow is also lying in the Upper Sava Valley, where there is only a few cm. Elsewhere there is less snow, but we do not have exact data. Significant snow cover in the Julians is mostly above just over 1000 m, elsewhere mostly above 1500 m.
The snow cover is partly soft, in places covered with a thin crust, which mostly formed due to wind.
Avalanche danger is level 1.
The snow cover is mostly stable and consolidated. Only exceptionally can you trigger a small snow slab avalanche on steep high mountain slopes.
Tonight or tomorrow during the day it will clear up and then sunny weather will prevail until Friday. The freezing level, which is today around 1000 above sea level, will drop a little lower tomorrow. The snow cover will transform mainly on sun-exposed slopes, and even there only slowly. In the shade the snow cover condition will remain largely unchanged. From tonight until the night to Thursday a strong north to north-east wind will blow, which will transport snow into wind slabs, the surface crust will strengthen.
The next report will be published on Friday, 12.12.2014.
General avalanche danger is level 1 on the European five-level scale.
