The danger level is 2 on the European 5-level scale - MODERATE.
Main problem: favourable conditions, new snow
Danger pattern: Spring situation
Risk assessment
Avalanche danger is mostly LOW, level 1. The snowpack is mostly stable, icy in places, and similar on ridges. Therefore, there is a risk of slipping.
Snow conditions
The snowpack is mostly stable, hard or crusted. On Friday afternoon and into Saturday night, 5 to 10 cm of snow fell, which the wind largely redistributed, so there are small patches on the hard base in places. But already on Sunday, the new snow sintered and bonded to the base under the influence of sun and slightly higher temperatures; only in shady areas is there still some dry snow on the hard base. Especially on sun-exposed slopes and ridges, the snowpack is icy.
Forecast weather development
Today partly clear with occasional moderate cloudiness. Weak variable winds, somewhat stronger northwesterlies in the eastern part of our mountains. Freezing level around 1400 m. Tonight into Tuesday, possible light precipitation on Pohorje and eastern Karawanks. Tomorrow, Tuesday, moderately to mostly cloudy and mostly dry. Slightly cooler, daytime freezing level around 1100 m. Weak southerly winds. Wednesday mostly sunny with possible afternoon snow showers. Weak to moderate northerly winds. Thursday mostly cloudy and slightly warmer.
Trend in snow conditions
Today on sunny slopes, the snowpack will sinter during the day and freeze at night. Tomorrow during the day it will mostly remain frozen; on Wednesday, it will sinter slightly again on northern slopes, but not up to the highest peaks. On Thursday, snow in the mid-mountains will soften somewhat, while above about 1800 m in the high mountains it will remain hard. No major changes in avalanche conditions are expected in the coming days.
