Snow conditions 8.5.2023

8.05.2023
General danger level - Monday, 8 May 2023
Danger is level 2 on the European five-level scale - MODERATE.
Main problem: wet snow
Danger pattern: Spring situation

Risk assessment
Avalanche danger in the high mountains above approx. 2000 m a.s.l. is MODERATE, level 2, lower down mostly LOW, level 1. Dangerous are steep slopes in higher elevations of the high mountains. Greater attention needed especially in gullies and below rock faces, where avalanches can reach lower. Danger greater in sunny weather midday and afternoon.

Snow conditions
Snow continues to settle and transform, melting lower down. Due to cloudiness and high snow line during precipitation in recent days, snow remained soft and wet, not frozen even in high mountains this morning. Under human weight it mostly sinks deeply.

Expected weather development
Today cloudy and foggy, occasional light rain locally. Tomorrow morning and partly forenoon cloudy and foggy locally, then cloud cover breaking, hard to predict where more sun. Wind light, easterly directions. Zero isotherm at height of highest peaks. Wednesday daytime precipitation spreading west to east, in eastern Karawanks and on Pohorje possibly dry until late afternoon or evening. Snow line 1600-1800 m a.s.l. Light, locally occasionally moderate east to southeast wind. Cloudy and foggy with occasional precipitation also Thursday. Snow line depending on precipitation intensity, thus may vary slightly. Easterly wind strengthening somewhat. End of week quite cloudy, occasional local precipitation. Least Friday. Temperature conditions not changing much.

Trend of snow conditions
Snow and avalanche conditions will gradually worsen somewhat in high mountains due to new snow. By Friday up to 40 cm or more snow possible above approx. 2000 m in mountains. Thus new snow avalanches possible from steep slopes, lower down rain further soaking old snow where present. Especially Thursday with strengthening wind, wind deposits and slabs forming. With relatively cold moist air mass overhead, sun no influence on snow conditions. High mountains esp. above approx. 2200 m temperatures around 0°C or slightly below, snow remains soft, consolidates slower. Start next week no stabilization in sight. WITH THIS DAY WE CEASE PUBLISHING REPORTS ON SNOW AND AVALANCHE CONDITIONS IN HILLS AND MOUNTAINS. Resume beginning winter depending snow conditions, possibly earlier with abundant snowfall.
