Snow conditions 8 May 2025
9.05.2025
General danger level - Thursday, 8 May 2025
Danger is level 2 on the European five-level scale - MODERATE.
Main problem: wet snow
Danger pattern: Spring situation
Risk assessment
Avalanche danger above 2000 m is MODERATE, level 2, lower LOW, level 1. Smaller wet snow avalanches can release spontaneously or due to a skier from steep slopes. Wet bonded snow avalanches can also release spontaneously.
Snow conditions
With occasional minor precipitation in recent days, snow and avalanche conditions have not changed much. Above about 2000 m, up to about 10 cm of snow has fallen. The snow cover is settling and melting lower down, the snow line is still rising - consolidated it mostly starts at about 2000 m, slightly lower in gullies. The main danger remains avalanches of wet unbonded snow. Smaller ones can release spontaneously or due to human influence mainly on very steep slopes. In addition, some wet bonded snow avalanche that can be deep can release spontaneously.
Forecast weather development
On Friday it will be mostly cloudy and summits will often be in clouds. Light local precipitation is possible, snow line between 1600 and 2000 m. Wind will be light. Freezing level at about 2000 m above sea level. On Saturday and Sunday there will be more sunny weather, so snow will soften more during the day on southern slopes. Slightly warmer. On Monday and Tuesday it will be cloudier and a bit cooler again.
Trend in snow conditions
Below 2000 m there is little snow and it will decrease further. Higher up the snow cover is getting thicker and not yet transformed in depth. Therefore, the danger will remain MODERATE, level 2 for some time. Especially when loading the snow cover on steep slopes, a wet snow avalanche can be triggered. On the night to Saturday and Sunday, the snow will freeze, so it may be icy in places in the morning. There are still cornices on ridges and some can collapse on their own. As of today, we have stopped publishing snow and avalanche condition reports. We will resume them in the autumn, presumably mid-November, earlier if necessary, or later if there is no snow in the mountains.
