Snow conditions 9.12.2013

9.12.2013
A dry weekend is behind us. It warmed up somewhat, the snow line rose to an altitude of around 1300 m on Sunday, and to 2300 m today. The snow cover has slowly transformed, but in gullies the snow has remained almost unchanged.

In the high mountains of the Julian Alps there is 90 to about 130 cm of snow, at 1500 m, and also elsewhere in our mountains, up to about 50 cm.

There is a lot of wind-packed snow, on wind-exposed slopes it is scoured to the ground in places. Significant snow cover extends to an altitude of around 1200 m, especially in shaded areas even lower. The snow is dry, mainly in sunny areas and at lower altitudes crusty and sometimes icy. The avalanche danger is now mostly level 1. Only in places with wind-packed snow and on steep slopes, especially in gullies, larger loads on the snow cover can trigger an avalanche.

Dry weather will continue. The snow line will be at altitudes between 2000 and 2500 m. The snow cover will slowly settle.

The next report on the snow cover situation will be published on Friday, 13.12.2013.

General avalanche danger is level 1 on the European five-level scale.
