Snow conditions 9.12.2016

10.12.2016
General danger level - Friday, 9.12.2016

Danger is level 1 on the European 5-level scale - LOW.

Main problem:

Risk assessment

Avalanche danger is level 1, LOW. Only wind slab areas on steeper slopes are more dangerous, where with greater additional load you might still trigger a small slab avalanche. The snowpack is mostly hard and icy in places, so there is a high risk of slipping.

Snow conditions

In higher elevations it warmed up considerably, but the air was dry and the warming did not affect the snowpack much. The snowpack remains relatively stable, hard and icy in places, only in gullies it is partly covered with crust that does not support a person.

Forecast weather development

Dry weather will continue. Temperature inversion will persist until Sunday inclusive. On Sunday afternoon it will slowly start to cool, but until then the freezing level will be above our highest peaks. Air will remain dry, so snow will only soften slightly during the day on southern slopes. By Monday morning the freezing level will drop below 2000 m a.s.l.

Trend of snow conditions

The snowpack will remain stable and partly icy, avalanche danger LOW. However, there will still be risk of slipping due to the hard and partly icy snowpack, and on wind-scoured ridges.
