Snow conditions 9.12.2018
10.12.2018
Danger is 1st degree on the European five-level scale - LOW.
Main problem:
Danger pattern: Cooling after warm weather / warming after frost
Risk assessment
Avalanche danger is LOW, 1st degree. The snowpack is stable. In the high mountains there are many windslabs, where the only possibility is that a slab breaks loose on sufficiently steep slopes under heavy loading.
Snow conditions
On Saturday morning it snowed in the mountains, with 5 to about 15 cm of snow falling, which the wind strongly redistributed. The snow line dropped below 1000 m, but snow mostly remained only above 1000 m. Otherwise there is little snow in the mountains, somewhat more only in the high parts of the Julian Alps. The snow cover is soft in sheltered locations, mostly crusty in wind-exposed locations, sometimes hard. The snow cover height is very uneven due to the wind.
Forecast weather development
In the coming days, changeable cloudy weather with intermittent sunny periods. Quite windy, today a strong southwesterly will blow, which will weaken slightly in the afternoon and turn to northwesterly. Tomorrow and Tuesday wind from northerly to northwesterly directions, on Wednesday northwesterly. It will gradually cool from tomorrow onwards. Some short-lived snow showers possible mainly today and tomorrow.
Trend of snow conditions
Due to low temperatures, the snow will transform and settle only slowly. Wind will form new windslabs on the southern sides of ridges and saddles, and crust will also form due to the wind. Avalanche danger will be LOW, 1st degree. Only in places with wind-deposited snow we still recommend some caution.
