Risk assessment
Avalanche danger is mostly LOW, level 1. Especially in wind-scoured and therefore icy areas, there is a high SLIPPERY RISK. The snowpack is mostly stable. Only on steep, shady high-mountain slopes are there rare spots with individual old slabs that can release under heavy load. Caution also in areas with fresh wind-blown snow, which will settle today on sun-exposed slopes due to the warm weather.
Snow conditions
Snow conditions are hardly changing. Due to transient thaws, snow in the mid-mountains, especially on sun-exposed slopes, is slowly melting, in the shade it remains dry and frozen. Although only about 5 cm of snow fell during the last snowfall, the strong northwester has completely blown it away and in some gullies there is quite a bit of dry, unbonded snow on a hard base that also avalanches, but due to the small amount these are only small avalanches. These spots can be dangerous because dry, wind-blown snow can slide under you and knock you down. Wind-exposed locations are scoured, even to bare ground, snow is icy in places.
Forecast weather development
Today mostly clear. Mostly light northwester blowing, which will turn increasingly westward in the afternoon. Temperature above zero, air dry. Tomorrow it will cloud over in the hills of northern Primorska and Notranjska and along the southern ridges of the Julians, so most of our alpine world will remain in mostly clear weather until night. Top of the cloud layer below 1500 m above sea level. In the morning mostly light southwester, strengthening somewhat in the afternoon. Zero isotherm mostly still above the highest peaks until evening. Friday mostly cloudy, initially some sun still in the east. Around noon occasional light precipitation in the hills of western Slovenia, afternoon and evening possibly elsewhere too. Initially light to moderate westerly or southwesterly wind, which will gradually turn northward during the day. Cooling.
Tendency of snow conditions
Today snow on sun-exposed slopes will settle during the day and soften slightly on the surface. At night it will refreeze mainly in the high mountains, in the mid-mountains only in frost pockets. Tomorrow too, snow on sunny slopes will settle during the day. In the shade, snow will remain dry and hard. Slip risk will remain HIGH mainly on shady slopes, on sunny slopes only in the morning.
