General danger level - Wednesday, 9. 3. 2022
Danger is 1st degree on the European five-level scale - LOW.
Main problem: weak layers, wind slab
Danger pattern: Cooling after warm weather / warming after frost
Risk assessment
Avalanche danger is mostly LOW, 1st degree. More dangerous are places with wind slab, mainly on southern and western slopes. Caution especially in gullies, where there can still be larger amounts of wind slab, and at transitions from thicker to thinner snow cover. You can trigger an avalanche mainly under greater load on the snow cover. Wind-exposed locations are heavily scoured. The snow cover is icy in places, where there is considerable risk of slipping.
Snow conditions
The snow cover has not changed significantly in recent days. Temperature was below zero. Weak to moderate north to north-east wind was blowing, which in places still created small snow drifts. Snow is mostly hard and crusted, only in shady and more sheltered locations there is up to 20 cm of soft wind slab in places. The snow cover in the mountains is significantly thinner than the long-term average for this time. In high mountains there is about 1 m less snow, in mid-mountains about 0.5 m. The height of the snow cover is very uneven. Wind-exposed locations are heavily scoured, even to bare ground. Due to pronounced night-time cooling of the snow cover, surface hoar has begun to form.
Forecast weather development
Today mostly clear, only in eastern Karawanks and on Pohorje some variable cloudiness. Weak to moderate wind from northern directions will blow. It will warm up somewhat, in the afternoon at 1500 m temperature around -1, at 2500 -9 °C. On Thursday initially mostly clear, during the day it will gradually cloud over from the east, higher peaks of Kamnik-Savinja Alps and eastern Karawanks will occasionally also be in clouds. Weak to moderate northerly wind will blow. In the afternoon it will gradually cool from the east. On Friday initially in Julian Alps and western and central Karawanks moderately to mostly cloudy, elsewhere clear, during the day it will clear everywhere. Weak easterly to north-easterly wind will blow. Cold, temperature in mountains below zero.
Trend in snow conditions
Snow conditions will not change much. Snow will remain hard and frozen. Today and tomorrow during the day on sun-exposed slopes mainly in mid-mountains the snow cover on the surface will slightly soften, in more shaded locations conditions will remain unchanged. The snow cover will be stable, only at places with wind slab caution is needed. Considerable risk of slipping will still remain. Next avalanche bulletin we will publish on Friday, 11.3.2022.
