Snow conditions 9.5.2014

10.05.2014
In the last few days sunny weather has prevailed, only mid-week a cold front passed through our regions and there was temporary rain, also snow in the high mountains, but only a few centimetres of snow fell. The freezing level was mostly at the height of our highest peaks, only on Thursday it temporarily lowered somewhat. Snow has been melting slowly.

Snow lies in the high mountains, in gullies especially in the Julian Alps also below around 1200 m. The snow cover occasionally freezes overnight mainly in the high mountains and in frost hollows, and even there only on calm, clear nights.

Avalanche danger is mostly 1st degree everywhere.

The snow cover is stable, it softens somewhat during the day especially on sun-exposed slopes and lower in gullies. In the morning it is often frozen and hard, sometimes icy.

Tomorrow, Saturday, relatively sunny weather with daytime development of cumulus clouds, afternoon isolated showers and thunderstorms. Sunday gradually cloudier, afternoon already possible some shower or thunderstorm, more pronounced precipitation with cooling expected from the north in the evening and overnight to Monday. Then the snow line will drop to altitude between 1300 and 1500 m a.s.l.

At the end of the week the freezing level will be above the highest peaks, so snow will freeze overnight mainly in frost hollows and in the high mountains Saturday night, less likely Sunday night.

The next report on snow cover conditions will be issued on Monday, 12.5.2014 in the morning.

General avalanche danger is 1st degree on the European five-level scale.
