Snow conditions 9. 12. 2024
9.12.2024
General danger level - Monday, 9. 12. 2024
The danger is level 1 on the European five-level scale - LOW.
Main problem: favourable conditions
Risk assessment
Winter conditions have prevailed in the mountains for several weeks, requiring special attention and the use of appropriate equipment. Although there is little snow everywhere for this time of year, small wind slabs with wind-blown snow have formed in the high mountains in leeward positions. There, the release of a small slab avalanche is not excluded, which can cause a fall on steep terrain. On wind-exposed spots, the old icy snow base is exposed in places, on which we can slip. Both threats are spatially quite limited, so choosing safe passages with a safe runout in the deposition area or using appropriate winter equipment is important.
Snow conditions
Light precipitation occurred during the night from Sunday to Monday; a thin snow cover formed above approximately 1000 m, and up to 10 cm of dry snow fell above 1500 m. In the high mountains, the snow fell on the old thin frozen base. Overall, there is little snow - up to 20 cm in the high Julian Alps, and up to 30 cm in the Karawanks and Kamnik-Savinja Alps.
Forecast weather development
For weather information in the mountains until the next avalanche bulletin, we recommend following the dedicated forecast available at:
https://meteo.arso.gov.si/met/sl/weather/bulletin/summer/ Trend in snow conditions
There will very likely be no precipitation that would cause general avalanche danger at least until mid-next week. Until then, it will warm up slightly - now around -3 °C at 1500 m, around 0°C in the second half of this week, and probably a few degrees more at the beginning of next week. There will be no precipitation, nor wind that would transport loose snow abundantly. Snow conditions will not change significantly, so the next report on conditions is expected to be published at the beginning of next week.
