Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič

29.11.2021
Avalanche Bulletin 2 for 29.11.2021 at 6:00 for the area of the Municipality of Tržič.

General avalanche danger at 1500 meters in the area of the Municipality of Tržič is level 2 on the five-level European scale. Above 1800 meters above sea level, it is level 3.
Above 1700 meters, dangerous areas include those with wind-packed snow and areas where snow has covered rocks. Below 1500 meters, primarily grass-covered slopes with sufficient steepness (>30°). There, the danger is level 2.

Last night, up to 25 cm of new snow fell at 1500 meters. Higher up, there may be slightly more snow. Above 1700 meters, a north wind with gusts up to 30 km/h blew, transporting snow and forming slabs and drifts. There is a lot of deposited snow on leeward sides, where a slab avalanche can be triggered with minimal additional load.

Today, it will be cold in the hills of the Municipality of Tržič. At 1500 meters, it will be around -7°C during the day, at 2000 meters around -10°C. At 1500 meters, a north wind up to 20 km/h will blow, at 2000 meters up to 40 km/h. In higher areas, the sun may occasionally shine.
Tomorrow, we can expect a bit more sun. It will still be cold. On Wednesday, it will warm up slightly, on Thursday we expect another deterioration of the weather.

In the last two days, up to 70 cm of snow fell around 1500 meters. The snow is dry. In the high mountains, wind blew, transporting snow and forming drifts and slabs. Yesterday afternoon, due to the north wind, the snow cover surface cooled rapidly. In just 4 hours, it cooled further by -10°C, which slows down the snow cover transformation process. In the evening, it started snowing. An additional 25 cm of snow fell at 1500 meters. Higher up, possibly more. Below 1300 meters, the old snow cover was somewhat more moist, which froze in parts during the afternoon.
In the coming days, due to low air temperatures, the snow cover transformation will be slow. The wind, which will blow stronger in the high mountains, will continue to form slabs and drifts. Therefore, the avalanche danger will remain locally level 3 above 1800 meters, level 2 lower down.
