Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 10.4.2023

The general avalanche danger in the area of the Municipality of Tržič will be LOW, level 1 on the five-level European scale. Avalanche danger will be level 2 above 1700 meters from Monday onwards.

In the last two days, up to 20 cm of snow fell in the mid-mountain area around Tržič, higher in the high mountains possibly a bit more. Snow in the high mountains fell on a hard, frozen base and did not bond. A south to northeast wind blew, transporting and drifting snow under northern ridges and under ridges on the southern side. On southern slopes, a soft crust formed, which is not stable. Drifted snow is also retained in narrow gullies on northern slopes. Since temperatures were always below freezing, the snow transformed and bonded very slowly.

Tomorrow, Monday, partly clear in the morning. It will gradually warm up. Midday air temperature will be around 0°C at 1500 meters, around -2°C at 2000 meters. In the high mountains, northeast wind up to 30 km/h in the morning, calming somewhat in the afternoon. Tuesday will be cloudy and warmer. At 1500 meters midday around +5°C, at 2000 meters around +3°C. Weak wind of variable directions.

The snowpack will remain dry and loose today Sunday and tomorrow Monday morning. Snow will fall again overnight into Monday. Wind will continue transporting snow and building wind crust areas on southern sides of ridges, where soft crust will form, and on northern sides under ridges. Be cautious on these areas. During the day, air temperature will rise slightly. Solar radiation will affect the snowpack on sun-facing slopes. On these parts, avalanches can be triggered with additional load. Spontaneous sloughing from sufficiently steep slopes is not ruled out. Tuesday will warm even more. Spontaneous sloughing is more likely. The snowpack will also be moist in the high mountains on all aspects. It will settle slowly. At lower elevations, snow will melt. Zero-degree isotherm height will be around 2300 meters on Tuesday.
Avalanche danger will increase slightly tomorrow Monday and be level 2 above 1700 meters. Also Tuesday level 2 above 1700 meters. Lower down level 1.
