Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 1.1.2023

The general avalanche danger in the area of the Municipality of Tržič above 1800 m is 2nd degree, below 1800 m 1st degree on the five-level European scale!

In the past days, high air temperatures even in the high mountains have strongly influenced the snowpack. Overnight the snow surface froze, during the day it heavily wettened. A thin crust formed. Snow melted below 1400 m, lower down it has almost disappeared. On sufficiently steep slopes, small to medium spontaneous avalanches of wet bonded snow occurred. Overall, the snow is well settled and the layers are connected. Locally there are still areas with windpacked snow that is poorly bonded to the old snowpack, however above 1900 m.

In the coming days, air temperatures in the mid-mountains and high mountains will be high for the time of year. Today at 1500 m around midday about +8°C, weak W to SW wind blowing. At 2000 m about +6°C, west wind up to 30 km/h. Tomorrow partly clear. Temperatures slightly lower but still above freezing.

Today and tomorrow the snowpack will heavily wetten and melt during the day, at night it will freeze in the high mountains. Above 1900 m weak layers are present in the old snowpack. From sufficiently steep slopes, especially grassy ones, small to medium avalanches of wet poorly bonded snow will release spontaneously. There will also be a risk of slab releases, so be cautious in leeward positions!
With elevation the snowpack depth also decreases. In the mid-mountains the snow will be heavily wet and melting. Below 1200 m there is almost no snow left.
