Avalanche bulletin 59, Monday 11.4.2022 at 5:30 for the area of the Municipality of Tržič.
The general danger of avalanche release in the area of the Municipality of Tržič above 1600 meters is level 2 on the five-level European scale, lower it is level 1.
In the last three days, quite some precipitation has fallen. Before the snowfall, rain thoroughly soaked the snowpack. On Saturday morning, it started snowing first in the high mountains. Air temperatures dropped rapidly, as did the surface of the snowpack. At 1500 meters, about 40 mm of precipitation fell, which represents about 40 cm of new snow. Initially, a few centimeters of wet snow fell, then dry snow. The snow line was very low. Higher in the high mountains, more snow fell. The snowfall was accompanied by a strong S wind, which transported and blew the snow. Under S-facing slopes of the high mountains, under ridges on the southern side, and in narrow gullies, there is a lot of wind-blown snow that is not stable. Overnight, the snowpack did not settle and transform much, as air temperatures were low. Yesterday afternoon, solar radiation already affected the snow on sun-exposed slopes. The snow remained moist. Last night, the surface of the snowpack froze and formed a crust.
Today, there will be nice weather in the Tržič hills. Air temperature during the day at 1500 meters will reach 5°C, with a light JZ wind blowing. At 2000 meters, it will be around 0°C, with a W wind up to 20 km/h. Tomorrow it will be even warmer with some clouds.
The new snow has bonded relatively well with the old snow surface. There is a lot of wind-blown snow under the slopes on shade-exposed sides. On shade-exposed sides of the high mountains, the snow will mostly remain dry today. There is a lot of slabs, so be careful, as a slab avalanche can be triggered with minimal additional load. Some slopes are wind-scoured to the old snow base or to bare ground. On shade-exposed sides, solar radiation will strongly affect the snow. We expect wet loose snow avalanches to release spontaneously from sufficiently steep slopes, so do not linger under slopes with frequent avalanches. Overnight, due to lower temperatures, the avalanche danger will slightly decrease.
Tomorrow, on Tuesday and Wednesday, due to high temperatures, the danger will remain higher during the day. Fairly high temperatures will also affect the snow on shade-exposed sides, so we do not rule out spontaneous release of avalanches from sufficiently steep slopes. The snow will melt quickly on sun-exposed locations.
The next local avalanche bulletin will be issued on Wednesday 13.4.2022.
