Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 12.1.2022
13.01.2022
Avalanche Bulletin 22, Wednesday 12.1.2022 at 11:00 for the area of the Municipality of Tržič.
The general avalanche danger in the area of the Municipality of Tržič above 1300 m a.s.l. is degree 2 on the five-level European scale, lower down it is degree 1 on the five-level European scale.
The wind blowing in the past days has transported snow and formed wind slabs and cushions. There is a lot of wind-blown snow under northern faces and especially on southern slopes, where a soft cushion has formed. Since air temperatures were low, the snow remained dry, but it is already influencing the snow temperature in the snowpack. The snowpack has been transforming and bonding very slowly. Ridges are scoured by wind to the old hard or icy base. Exposed slopes are also scoured to bare ground in places.
Today it will be clear. Air temperature at 1500 m will be around -5°C, moderate to strong north to north-east wind up to 50 km/h will blow. At 2000 m, daytime air temperature will be around -7°C, strong north-west wind up to 60 km/h will blow. Tomorrow it will be clear. Temperatures will be higher than today and the wind will subside somewhat.
Wind in the high mountains will also today and tomorrow transport snow and build cushions. Snow will deposit on southern slopes, under faces and in narrow gullies. Here you can trigger wind slab avalanches with additional stress. Snow will remain dry today and tomorrow due to low temperatures and fairly low air humidity. Tomorrow afternoon, air temperature will be somewhat higher and on sun-facing slopes the surface snow will moisten slightly. On the night to Friday, a thin crust will form. We expect that due to higher air temperatures, small bonded snow avalanches will release on sufficiently steep sun-facing slopes. Also on shade-facing locations, due to higher air temperature, individual dry loose snow avalanches or sloughs may release.
Conditions in the high mountains are serious and tricky regardless of the 2nd degree avalanche danger. Be cautious.
