Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 12.12.2022

The general avalanche danger in the area of the Municipality of Tržič is 3rd degree above 1600 meters on the five-level European scale, and 2nd degree lower down.

In the last three days, up to 60 cm of snow has fallen in the high mountains above 1700 meters. The north wind has transported dry snow and formed wind slabs and slabs. There are weak or critical layers in the old snowpack. Below 1600 meters, up to 30 cm of snow has fallen in recent days. The snow there is also dry. The new snow has transformed only slowly, as the air has cooled. The snow surface temperature has dropped to -20°C. On north-facing slopes, some small to large dry snow avalanches have been triggered.

Today and tomorrow, it will be sunny and cold. Air temperature at 2000 meters will be around -12°C, at 1500 meters around -9°C. The north wind has calmed down. The air will warm up from mid-week onwards, when we expect weather deterioration and influx of moist air again. The snow line will rise. Avalanche conditions will change rapidly.

The snowpack will transform slowly due to the cold air. The north wind that blew during snowfall has built avalanche problems. There is a huge amount of wind-blown snow. Critical layers will remain, so be careful. Especially in shady areas or on north-facing sides above 1600 meters, the snowpack is very unfavorable. In these areas, even a small additional load can disrupt the balance in the snowpack and trigger a slab avalanche. Wind-blown snow is also present on south-facing slopes in the high mountains. Since the snow is dry, a light wind will continue to transport it in the coming days.
