Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 13.12.2021

Avalanche Bulletin 8, Monday 13.12.2021 at 8:00 for the area of the Municipality of Tržič.

The general avalanche danger above the forest line in the Municipality of Tržič area is degree 3 on the five-degree European scale. Below the forest line it is degree 2.

The wind that blew over the past two days has been building avalanche problems. In the high mountains above Tržič, gusts of north wind reached up to 60 km/h. The north wind transported and deposited snow in leeward positions. There is a lot of wind-blown snow under ridges, in gullies and hollows. It formed wind slabs and crusts. Ridges are scoured to the hard base. Fresh and old snow deposits are very unstable and can be triggered by even small additional load. On shady slopes, snow is slowly settling and metamorphosing. Solar radiation also affected the snow. On sunny slopes, small to medium avalanches released spontaneously.

Today in the morning it will be cloudy in the Tržič high mountains. In the afternoon it may partly clear. It will be relatively warm. At 1500 meters around +3°C, north wind up to 20 km/h. At 2000 meters around +1°C, northerly wind up to 40 km/h. Tomorrow partly clear. The wind will calm somewhat.

Overnight to Monday, air temperature rose, which will affect the transformation and stability of the snowpack. Today during the day, snow on sunny slopes will melt. Snow will settle and metamorphose. It will be somewhat different on shady or north slopes, where transformation will be somewhat slower than on sunny slopes, especially in the high mountains. There is a huge amount of deposited snow. Weak layers have formed in areas with wind-blown snow. Such areas are currently hard to recognize, so be cautious.
Solar radiation will strongly affect the snowpack on sunny slopes (S slope of Begunjščica, S slope of Vrtače, S slope of Košute ridge, S slope of Dobrče, S slope of Kriške gore and Tolstega vrha, S slope of Storžiča, ...). There, today and tomorrow, spontaneous slab avalanches will release. Areas with grassy base will be particularly dangerous. Staying under south or sunny slopes will be very dangerous, so we advise against walking under these slopes!!!!
