Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 14.4.2023

The general snow avalanche danger in the Municipality of Tržič area will be CONSIDERABLE, 3rd degree on the five-degree European scale. Below 1300 meters it will be MODERATE, 2nd degree.

At approximately 1500 meters the snowpack thickened by 60 to 70 cm in the last day. Higher in the high mountains there is even more snow, as it started snowing a bit earlier due to lower air temperatures. In the high mountains, above approximately 1900 meters, snow fell on a hard base and bonded poorly. Snowfall was accompanied by S to NE wind with gusts up to 25 km/h, which transported snow in smaller quantities. The snow also settled due to its own weight. Avalanches released spontaneously from sufficiently steep slopes.
Lower down it started snowing intermittently and the new snow bonded better with the old snow surface. The snow line descended during yesterday and reached approximately 800 m a.s.l.
Snow and avalanche conditions were demanding and unpredictable yesterday and last night into Friday.

Today it will be cloudy with occasional precipitation. Above 1500 meters up to 15 cm of snow can fall. Air temperature at 1500 meters will be around -1°C, at 2000 meters around -4°C. This morning in the high mountains above 1800 meters a strong northerly wind with gusts up to 60 km/h will blow. In the afternoon the wind will weaken somewhat and towards evening it will change direction and blow from NW.

Today there will still be snow in the mountains above Tržič, but not as intense as yesterday. Over the course of today above 1500 meters up to 15 cm of snow will fall. The northerly wind blowing in the high mountains in the morning time at speeds up to 60 km/h will transport snow and mostly deposit it on southern slopes. Wind slabs and dunes will also form elsewhere. The snowpack will be very unstable. With minor additional stress we can trigger medium to large snow avalanches on all slopes, regardless of aspect! The new snowpack will also settle and metamorphose. Avalanches will release spontaneously from sufficiently steep slopes, so do not linger under such slopes prone to frequent avalanches.
In the coming days we advise against visiting the mid-mountains and especially the high mountains!
