Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 15.12.2022

General avalanche danger in the area of the Municipality of Tržič above 1600 meters is level 3 on the five-level European scale, lower it is level 2.

In the high mountains, the snowpack is dry and loose. There are still many drifts and cornices. On these parts, the snowpack is unstable. In the past days, air temperatures were quite low. The snow has settled and transformed very slowly. A SW wind was also blowing, which additionally transported snow and built new drifts, cornices, and slabs. Below 1600 meters, the snow is more stable.

The snow line is slowly rising and will be tomorrow, Friday afternoon, around 1900 meters. Below this altitude, it will rain, higher up it will snow continuously. We expect up to about 30 cm of new snow in the high mountains by Saturday evening. Below 1900 meters, rain will turn to snow on Friday afternoon. It will cool down by Saturday. The snow line on Saturday will be around 600 meters. On Friday, a SW wind up to 70 km/h will blow in the high mountains, on Saturday it will calm down and blow from the north up to 30 km/h.

Currently, the snowpack in the high mountains is still loose. Overnight to Friday, the snow will gradually become wetter with increasing altitude. Above 1900 meters it will snow continuously, lower down new snow will fall on a soaked snow surface due to rain. Due to the transition from rain to snow below 1900 meters, the snow will bond better with the old snowpack. On sufficiently steep slopes in the high mountains (>35°) spontaneous avalanching is expected due to new snow. During snowfall, a SW wind will additionally transport and deposit snow in leeward positions under ridges (S, SE), where it will build avalanche problems. On these parts, the snow will be very unstable. Also on steep southern grassy slopes (>35°), spontaneous avalanching (wet snow avalanches) can occur. Avalanche conditions will worsen this evening and remain demanding until Sunday. In these days, we advise against visiting the high mountains.
