Avalanche bulletin 37, Tuesday 15.2.2022 at 13:00 for the area of the Municipality of Tržič.
The general avalanche danger level in the area of the Municipality of Tržič is 3 on the five-level European scale. Below 1200 meters it is level 2.
Above 1200 meters, today's fresh snow is falling on hard, in places even icy old snow surface. The fresh snow will bond very poorly with the old snow base. South to southwest wind is transporting snow. This is more pronounced in the high mountains, where it deposits it on NE, S, and NW slopes. Soft wind slabs will form in these areas. Here, the wind will deposit fresh snow on hard or icy old snow cover, creating a critical layer. Elsewhere, the wind will create drifts, cornices, and wind slabs.
Below 1200 meters, fresh snow will fall on wet or sun-affected surfaces. Here it will bond somewhat better.
Today it will snow in the Tržič mountains. Approximately 20 to 30 cm of snow may fall at 1500 meters. Air temperature at 1500 meters will be around -2°C, with S to SW wind up to 10 km/h. At 2000 meters it will be around -4°C, with SW wind up to 40 km/h. Up to 35 cm of new snow may fall at 2000 meters today. The snow line will be around 600 meters this afternoon.
Precipitation will ease overnight into Wednesday. It will partially clear towards morning. Tomorrow, air temperature at 1500 meters will be around -1°C.
Fresh snow will bond very poorly with the old snow base. A critical layer will form here. There will be many soft wind slabs on NE, S, and NW slopes and below ridges. In these areas, you can trigger wind slab avalanches even with minimal additional load. The S to SW wind blowing during snowfall will create drifts, wind slabs, and cornices. This will be more pronounced in the high mountains. Avoid areas with wind-loaded or deposited snow. We expect smaller to medium-sized snow avalanches to release spontaneously from sufficiently steep slopes due to the icy or hard base.
Below 1200 meters, the avalanche danger will be level 2. Here, fresh snow will bond better with the old snow surface.
Also avoid walking under open slopes where the base was bare and grassy before snowfall!!!. There will also be a danger of spontaneous avalanches in these areas.
We advise against visiting the high mountains for the next two days, as conditions will be dangerous and demanding. Even tomorrow, 16.2.2022, the avalanche danger in the Municipality of Tržič above 1200 meters will be level 3 on the five-level European scale!
