Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 15.3.2023

15.03.2023
The general avalanche danger in the area of the Municipality of Tržič is level 2 on the five-level European scale. Below 1800 meters, it is level 1 on the five-level scale.

In the mid-mountains up to an altitude of approximately 1600 meters, not much snow has fallen. Higher in the high mountains, above 1800 meters, it started snowing a little earlier, but no more than 15 cm of snow fell. The snow fell on a wet base at all elevations and has bonded relatively well. The snowfall was initially accompanied by a strong SW wind, which transported the snow and built new wind slab areas. Yesterday evening, the wind changed direction and blew from the north. It cooled down. A few centimeters of snow fell in the evening hours above 1500 meters. The snow has locally surface-frozen by morning and a crust has formed. The snowpack has warmed up in depth and is wet down to the ground up to 1600 meters.
Old snow has also settled and melted at lower elevations. On slopes below 1200 meters, there is little or almost no snow left. New snow at these elevations has not changed avalanche and snow conditions.

Today in the Tržič hills, it will be cloudy in the morning, but clouds will break in the afternoon. Snow will still fall in the morning. No more than a few centimeters of snow will fall. Air temperature at 1500 meters will be around -3°C, at 2000 meters around -7°C. A northern wind with gusts up to 40 km/h will blow. Tomorrow, on Thursday, there will be more sun. Temperatures will be similar to today's. The northern wind will calm somewhat. On Friday, warmer air will start flowing to us from the south. The zero isotherm height will again be above 3000 meters.

The snow that fell yesterday during the day has bonded relatively well with the old snow surface, as it was wet. Initially, the snowfall was accompanied by a strong SW wind, which transported the snow into leeward positions and built wind slabs. There are most of them below ridges on northern sides, on slopes and in narrow gullies of the high mountains. Yesterday evening, the wind changed direction and began blowing from the north. In the high mountains, where the snow was drier, it started transporting it to southern slopes, where areas with drifted snow formed. On all sides below ridges of the high mountains until Friday morning, you can trigger a snow avalanche with additional load. By this morning, up to 5 cm of snow has fallen at 1600 meters, higher around 2000 meters up to about 15 cm of snow. Somewhat more snow is in the Stola area.
The snowpack in the high mountains has locally surface-frozen. There is not much new snow on the ridges, as the wind has blown it away. The snow line today is around 1000 meters, where 2 cm of snow has fallen.
Tomorrow, avalanche and snow conditions will be similar. Air temperatures will be similar to today's. The wind will still transport snow in smaller quantities. Sun-exposed slopes and areas up to 1500 meters will surface-soften during the day, snow will freeze in the night to Friday. Higher in the high mountains, snow will remain dry. Snow in gullies and below ridges of the high mountains on northern sides will remain dry and unprocessed. In the night to Friday, the atmosphere will start warming. Avalanche and snow conditions will change somewhat.
Today and until Friday morning above 1800 meters, level 2 avalanche danger in the area of the Municipality of Tržič, below 1800 meters level 1.
