Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 15.4.2023

15.04.2023
The general avalanche danger in the area of the Municipality of Tržič above 1500 m is CONSIDERABLE, 3rd level on the five-level European scale. Below 1500 m it will be MODERATE, 2nd level.

The snowpack has thickened by up to 1 m in the high mountains over almost two days. Some snow fell today as well. The snow has also settled. The north wind transported and deposited snow onto leeward slopes, under ridges and into narrow gullies. There is a huge amount of windblown snow in narrow gullies. On these parts, the snowpack was very unstable. Dry non-cohesive snow avalanches spontaneously released from steep slopes. Below about 1300 m, the snowpack was somewhat more moist.

Tomorrow, Saturday, it will be cloudy. Occasional snow showers possible. Amounts of new snow will not be large. Air temperature at 1500 m around 0°C, at 2000 m around -3°C. In the high mountains, west wind up to 25 km/h. Sunday will also be cloudy. In the afternoon, possible snow showers. Amounts will be small and will not affect current snow and avalanche conditions. Air temperatures similar to Saturday. In high mountains, NE wind up to 40 km/h.

The snowpack will continue settling. Zero isotherm height on Saturday and Sunday around 1500 m. New snow falling Saturday and Sunday will not affect current snow and avalanche conditions. Due to large amounts of windblown snow in gullies, under north ridges and on leeward aspects, the snowpack there is very unstable and can be triggered by even minor additional load as a dry non-cohesive snow slab avalanche. NE wind will continue transporting snow, especially Sunday. It will form new wind slabs and slab areas again.
In high and mid-mountains, it will be very difficult to identify unstable slab areas due to the amount of new snow. Sunday evening, the atmosphere will begin to warm, affecting the snowpack.
General avalanche danger will thus remain CONSIDERABLE above 1500 m until Sunday evening, 3rd level on the five-level European scale, below 1500 m 2nd level.
Snow and avalanche conditions are currently still demanding and unpredictable on all aspects and slopes regardless of orientation, so we still advise against visiting the mountains.
