Snow conditions in the area of the Municipality of Tržič 16.1.2023

The general avalanche danger in the area of the Municipality of Tržič above 1000 meters is level 3. Above 1800 meters today in the Municipality of Tržič there is HIGH avalanche danger!

In the area of the Municipality of Tržič, around 60 cm of snow fell at about 1500 meters during last night. Higher up, above about 1800 meters, there is even more snow. In the high mountains, snow fell on hard base in places. There it has bonded very poorly with the old snow surface. Snowfall was accompanied by wind. The wind deposited snow in leeward positions and built wind slabs. There is a huge amount of snow also in narrow gullies on all slopes. From sufficiently steep slopes, dry non-cohesive snow avalanches have spontaneously released.

Today at 1500 meters at midday it will be around -5°C. Occasionally snow will still drift. The wind will calm down somewhat in the high mountains this morning, but strengthen again in the afternoon. In the evening snowfall will intensify again, but not as intensely as last night. The snow line will rise to about 700 meters today. Up to tomorrow, up to 20 cm of snow can fall in the mid-mountains. Snowfall will be accompanied by S to SW wind up to 50 km/h.

The new snow will slowly transform due to low temperatures. The wind blowing during the day will transport snow and build new drifts and slabs. In the high mountains, where snow fell on hard base, the snowpack is very unstable. We expect that today during the day dry non-cohesive snow avalanches will spontaneously release from sufficiently steep slopes (>40°). We advise against visiting the mountains in the coming days, as conditions are dangerous! Above 1800 meters today in the area of the Municipality of Tržič there is HIGH avalanche danger.
